NARSF Programs Ltd.

NARSF Programs Ltd. provides a range of innovative health, harm-reduction, and counseling services to individuals, children, youth and families. Over time, we have continued to learn and grow along with our clients and community. We operate a variety of programs with experienced, qualified and professional staff. The majority of services are provided in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

Incepted as Nanaimo and Area Resource Services for Families in 1990, and renamed NARSF Programs Ltd. in 1999, services and programs include the Domestic Violence Response Program (DVRP), the Eating Disorders Program, the Living in Families with Teens (a parent-teen counseling program) Program, the Sexual Abuse Intervention Program (SAIP), the Mental Health Outreach Program for children and youth, the Transitions Youth Withdrawal and Supportive Residential Program and Central Vancouver Island Harm Reduction Services (CVIHRS) for individuals at risk to blood borne diseases.

Eating Disorders, Sexual Abuse Intervention, Mental Health Outreach and Youth Services Programs are located on the second floor of 190 Wallace Street. This location has wheelchair access and an elevator. Outer building doors are routinely locked at 4:30 p.m.

Sexual Abuse Intervention Program (SAIP) A community-based counselling program providing support to children, youth (6-18) and families where there has been a disclosure or suspected sexual abuse. SAIP provides a complementary pairing of prevention and treatment services. The goal is to lessen the impact of trauma associated with sexual abuse for the referred children and their families in the Nanaimo/Ladysmith area. Our approach is strength-based and collaborative when working with referred clients, caregivers and other service providers. Clinical services provide for full screening and assessment and the implementation of cognitive, systemic and behavioral interventions to optimize client functioning in the home, school and community setting.  Self referrals accepted.

Eating Disorders Program provides a complementary pairing of prevention and treatment services to lessen the impact of harm associated with persistent and serious eating patterns for referred children, youth (6 - 19) and families in the Nanaimo/Ladysmith area. Our approach is strengths-based and collaborative when working with referred clients, caregivers and service providers. Clinical services provide for full screening and assessment and the implementation of cognitive and behavioral interventions to optimize client functioning in the home, school and community setting. Self referrals accepted.

Mental Health Outreach (MHO) Offers assistance and support for children and youth who are experiencing significant mental health and ongoing emotional and/or behavior issues through outreach and counselling activities that promote healthy functioning within the home and community.  Supports parents with identifying new strategies for increasing parental capacity.  Must be referred by a clinician at Child and Youth Mental Health. 

Youth Services Program (YSP) provides support and assistance for youth who are vulnerable and at risk to access to health care and community resources, employment and housing support through outreach to promote healthy functioning within the home and community and develop basic life skills.  The goal of this program is to increase the safety of the youth served, and enhance their quality of life by building on their strengths and resources and with the intention of integrating the youth’s unique physical, developmental, spiritual and behavioral characteristics into a positive daily living experience.  Youth must be referred through MCFD.

Transitions and LIFT are located at the back of 170 Wallace Street.  Programs are accessible by wheelchair and parking is available on the street.

Transitions is designed to help youth and their families with problematic drug and alcohol use achieve their goal of abstinence or reduction of harmful consequences of substance abuse.  The program is voluntary, and offers non-medical withdrawal management and stablization for youth between the ages of 12 -19 years in private, safe, chemical-free and supportive care home settings.  Self referrals are accepted.

Living In Families with Teens (LIFT) A Program for parents and youth who are experiencing difficulties within the family relationship system. LIFT is a voluntary service that assists and supports parents in their role as caregivers with the goal of promoting parental capacity and maintaining the integrity of family. In addition, LIFT supports youth’s capacity to remain connected to their family/caregiver system.  Self referrals are accepted.

Domestic Violence Response Program (DVRP) in partnership with the Ministry for Children and Family Development (MCFD) and Haven Society (Men Choose Respect Program (MCR)) delivers support and safety accountability planning for men referred by MCFD. DVRP is part of a safer family and community response to domestic violence.  The program emphasizes support for the movement from understanding to choice and action and that action should directly contribute to the quality of life for children and families.
